Abstract

Research Project 6 of the Am. Petroleum Inst. is summarized. An integrated approach was used to, as far as possible, isolate, identify, and determine the amounts of the aromatic hydrocarbon components present in petroleum. Methods of analysis and compounds identified in four portions of the reference petroleum are reviewed: (1) The mononuclear aromatic portion of the light gas oil fraction, 230 to 305 C, (2) The dinuclear aromatic portion of the light gas oil fraction, 255 to 275 C, (3) The dinuclear aromatic portion of the light gas oil fraction, 275 to 300 C, (4) The trinuclear aromatic portion of the heavy gas oil and light lubricating distillate.
