Abstract

Born February 1915 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), Arndt was educated at Oxford University (1933–38) and London School of Economics (1938–41). After two years as a research assistant at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Arndt was Assistant Lecturer in Economics, University of Manchester (1943–46), Senior Lecturer, University of Sydney (1946–50) and then Professor of Economics in the School of General Studies and Research School of Pacific Studies. Australian National University (1951–80). He became Emeritus Professor of Economics, Australian National University in 1981. His many prestigious appointments include Member, Governing Council, United Nations Asian Institute for Economic Development and Planning (1969–75); Deputy Director, OECD (1972) and Chairman, Expert Group on Structural Change and Economic Growth Commonwealth Secretariat (1980).
