Abstract
AbstractThe Armée d'Afrique consisted of all French forces recruited from and based in North Africa from 1831 through 1962. Consisting of colonial, indigenous, and elite French units, the Armée d'Afrique became an important school for French officers, and a training ground for tactics and doctrine of the French army throughout the nineteenth century. Following World War I, the Armée d'Afrique became a formation of regular infantry units and the French Foreign Legion until its dissolution in 1962, following the French occupation of Algeria.
