President Joaquim Chissano has declared in public that he will not stand for a third term of office. Armando Guebuza, executive secretary of the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) party and a successful businessman and influential party member, has been nominated as his party's presidential candidate. Chissano will remain as leader of the party. Guebuza is expected to come up against opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama of the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) party.
