Abstract
The ARM996HS, a synthesizable 32-bit CPU built using clockless logic, is implemented from scratch using the handshake technology Timeless Design Environment (TiDE) design flow. The ARM996HS processor, fully compatible with ARM's ARMv5TE instruction set architecture (ISA) and Debug Architecture, is the first in a series of licensable, clockless CPUs available from ARM. It consumes about one-third the power of comparable synchronous, clock-gated, arm cores implementing the same ISA. The ARM996HS targets applications in areas where the needs for ultralow power, low electromagnetic emissions, and high robustness converge.
