Arithmêtikê stoicheiôsis: On diophantus and hero of Alexandria

Abstract

Two ancient mathematical works, cited in ancient sources as the ȁPreliminaries to the Arithmetic Elementsȁ and the ȁPreliminaries to the Geometric Elementsȁȁof which the former is no longer extant, while the latter is an alternative designation of the Definitions, now commonly attributed to Hero of Alexandriaȁare here argued to be companion works by the same author, namely Diophantus of Alexandria. This attribution has implications for the dating of Diophantus. Deux oeuvres mathématiques de l'antiquité, citées l'une comme les ȁPréliminaires aux Éléments arithmétiques,ȁ l'autre comme les ȁPréliminaires aux Éléments géometriquesȁ-desquelles la premiére ne survit plus, mais la séconde désigne par ailleurs les Définitions, attribuées habituellement à Héron d'Alexandrieȁsont assignées ici à Diophante d'Alexandrie. Cette attribution a des implications pour la question de la date de Diophante. Zwei mathematische Schriften, die im Altertum als die ȁPräliminarien zu den Arithmetischen Elementenȁ und die ȁPräliminarien zu den Geometrischen Elementenȁ zitiert werdenȁvon denen die erste nicht mehr existiert, aber die zweite identisch mit den normalerweise dem Heron von Alexandria zugeschriebenen Definitionen istȁwerden hier dem Diophant von Alexandria zugeschrieben. Diese Zuschreibung hat Folgerungen für die Frage der Datierung von Diophant.
