Abstract

With regard to the contradiction with the mathematical sciences, one should think of arguments like those offered in the small treatise de Linas Insecabilibus, which appears in the corpus Aristotelicum, but which is usually taken not to be written by Aristotle himself. In this treatise it is shown that the assumption that there are indivisible lines is in conflict with 'the things proved and laid down in mathematics', among them the firmly established conclusion that there are incommensurable lines. The reference to the 'discussion in the books about time and motion' showing the conflict between atomism and 'many of the reputable beliefs and the perceptual phenomena', must be to the sixth book of the Physics,
