Abstract

By the year 2000, bioenergy could supply up to 20% of the United States' current energy consumption. Certain arid-land plants can be grown for direct whole-crop use as fuels, for conversion from biomass to fuels and feedstocks and for sources of hydrocarbon products. Arid-land plants offer two choices for energy production: as a solid, direct-burn fuel for steam, and for conversion to liquid fuels. Shrubs and herbs available in the near term (2–5 yr) include guayule ( Parthenium argentatum), Russian thistle ( Salsola kali) and creosote bush ( Larrea tridentata). Liquid-fuel crops potentially available in the intermediate term (5–10 yr) include milkweed ( Asclepias spp.), rabbit bush ( Chrysothamus nauseosus) and dogbane ( Apocynum cannabinum). Tree crops potentially available in the long term (10–20 yr) include eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus spp.) and mesquite ( Prosopis spp.).
