Abstract

At sentencing Taylor offered the court a structured community service project. Responding to the need of a local hospital, Taylor proposed to use his construc tion skills to assist in building a summer camp for children with spina bifida. The judge agreed to this program and sentenced Taylor to two years of full time community service, followed by an additional three years at the rate of 20 hours per week. His tasks included building a summer camp and dormitory, and renovating other existing buildings so that parents could remain close to their children while they were in surgery. Additionally, as part of a financial penalty, Taylor was required to pay for up to $250,000 of the building materials for the renovations. Timesheets and documentation of his efforts were to be provided to the probation office on a quarterly basis by the executive committee of the local Spina Bifida Associa tion.
