Abstract

The absorption spectrum and photoionization cross sections of argon have been studied photoelectrically in the region 584-304 Å using a recently-developed plasma arc radiation source as background. For these experiments, the plasma arc was operated with helium, but other rare gases may also be used. Window resonances were observed in the argon photoionization continuum, due to autoionized transitions belonging to the series 3 s 2 3p 6 1S 0 → 3s 3p 6( 2S 1 2 )np 1P 0 1. A profile of the 3 s–4 p resonance has been obtained and its profile parameters have been calculated.
