Abstract

Areal linguistics is about linguistic areas; it is concerned with the diffusion of structural features across language boundaries within a geographical region. Various linguistic areas are exemplified: the Balkans, South Asia (Indian sub continent). Mesoamerica, the Northwest Coast of North America, the Baltic area, and Ethiopia. How linguistic areas are established and the importance of areal linguistics to historical linguistics are explained.
