Abstract
At a time when we are playing catch-up with the people with diabetes who were not able to connect with us during the thick of the pandemic, the health care system itself has fallen victim to COVID-19. Health care workers are leaving at alarming rates. Already in dire straits prior to COVID-19, the impact of the pandemic further exacerbated this problem, resulting in many health care professionals, including DCES, losing their jobs;or working from home virtually with the added burden of caring for children and homeschooling;or retiring—some by choice and some not;or being reassigned to COVID-19. Thinking it was a temporary situation, health care workers, including DCES, stepped up to help wherever they could and were lauded as heroes—until the burden just became too much.
