Abstract

These are the proceedings of a conference organized by the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and held in Washington in December 1984. The publication consists of three general papers by Samuel H. Preston Rafael M. Salas and Lord P. T. Bauer as well as a summary of the commentaries and discussions that followed the presentation of those papers. A general introduction to the revisionist theory of population that is currently being developed by various U.S. scholars and that is called here supply-side demography is also included. The focus of the conference is on global population trends with particular reference to their influence on third world development resource use famine environmental quality education income and the growth of cities. Current demographic trends and their consequences in developed countries are also briefly considered. A statistical appendix on the demographic state of the world is included.
