Abstract
OUR NATION has been blessed with vast and varied mineral wealth whose equal has not yet been found in any other single geographical area in the world. Possession of these resources and the ability to use them have made possible the rapid development of the United States to a position of great power and responsibility in the world and enabled its citizens to reach a standard of living never known before. The deposits of coal, iron ore, petroleum, phosphate rock, copper, and many other minerals essential to a progressive industrial civilization thus comprise our country's greatest asset. But we have been so richly endowed that, unfortunately, little thought has been given to the sad but true fact that our mineral resources are exhaustible.
