Abstract

In order to investigate the phase transition in compact QED (CQED) we examine the influence of the granularity of the lattice on the potential between monopoles in the strong coupling region of this theory. Using the flux definition of monopoles we introduce their centres of mass and are able to realize continuous shifts of the monopole positions. In this way we succeed in obtaining the monopole‐antimonopole potential for continuous separations and find periodic deviations from the supposed 1/r‐behaviour. These deviations lead to local extrema and to metastabilities. We suppose that the latter may influence the order of the phase transition in compact QED.
