Abstract

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER A vegetarian diet and a relatively high intake of dietary fiber (>25 g/d) are associated with a reduced risk of hospital admission or dying from diverticular disease (SOR: B, inception cohort study). Only fruit and cereal fiber, and not vegetable and potato fiber, showed significant risk reductions per 5 g/d fiber intake (SOR: B, prospective cohort study). Nut and popcorn consumption at least twice weekly are also associated with a decreased risk of diverticulitis (SOR: B, prospective cohort study).
