Abstract

Purpose: People with knee osteoarthritis (OA) experience significant joint pain and impaired physical function resulting in decreased quality of life. Limitation in physical function has been associated with decreased thigh muscle mass. Increased presence of adipose tissue in the thigh, particularly fat between and within muscles, has also been observed in these population. Furthermore, the presence of fat depots within a muscle belly, called intramuscular fat tissue (intraMAT), seems to be related to decreased strength and physical function.
