Abstract

Abstract This chapter describes the movie Star Trek’s replicator technology: a compact device that can conjure up virtually any material or object. In Star Trek, that raw material is pure energy and it is unclear how the energy-matter conversion process takes place, emphasizing the science fiction genre of the film. However, the chapter highlights a variety of synthetic nanostructures that resulted from raw chemical ingredients being broken down via chemical reactions. What is it about the replicator in Star Trek that makes it appear so ‘magical’ to 21st-century perspectives? For one, it is conjuring matter out of thin air and, second, the ‘on demand’ aspect of technology that seems other-worldly.
