Are suffixe and situation in Udampadumei in Tamil Grammar propounded by the author of Veeracholiyam?

Abstract

Next to Tholkaappiyam, the grammar book 'Veerasoliyam', written in the 11th century, is quite a notable one. This has been established as the first book written, incorporating the Sanskrit tradition into the Tamil grammar. Tholkaappiyam stresses only that the ending vowel sound of a preceding word and the initial sound of the following word when pronounced without a break in - between (gliding), the term 'Udampadumei' is required. With regards to this, the limitations to 'Udampadumei' was first mentioned by the book 'Veerasoliyam', according to early researchers.This research puts forth that all the details concerning 'Udampadumei' found in Veerasoliyam, are believed to be derived from Ilampooranar's explanation and Tholkaappiyam's 'seiyyul' and later could have been incorporated into it. Hence, until Ilampooranar's lifetime period is ascertained, the conclusion of the early researchers claiming that the situations where the use of suffixes in Udampadumei are solely propounded by the author of Veerasoliyam, cannot be accepted.
