Abstract

Potentially inappropriate prescribing in older patients is associated with increasing adverse drug reactions and medication related adverse outcomes, worsening of older patients ´self performance and frailty, acute hospitalizations, increased morbidity and mortality Studies concluded that appropriate prescribing in older patients is strongly influenced by physicians ´attitudes to novel and specific geriatric recommendations and use of geriatric guidelines in clinical practice. None of the studies were reported in India on knowledge of physicians in rational geriatric prescribing. We aimed our study to describe the knowledge among acute care physicians regarding inappropriate prescribing in older adults, preferences to use geriatric guidelines and to avoid high risk medications in older patients and to describe barriers to appropriate prescribing for older adults in India.
