Abstract

Purpose: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a major risk factor for early-onset knee osteoarthritis in young people, with the risk being even greater if the individuals suffer more than one ACL injury. Several consequences, such as impaired muscle function, failure to return to sport, decreased quality of life and fear of movement are common after injury, and are presumably related to both physical and psychological aspects. Greater psychological readiness to return to sport has previously been shown to play an important role for the return to sport decision but also for a lower risk of a second ACL injury.
