Abstract

We are grateful for the interest in our paper from the authors Harma et al. [ [1] Harma M. Harma M. Erel O. Are d-ROMs and FRAP tests suitable assays for detecting the oxidative status?. Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol. 2006; PubMed Google Scholar ]. We agree with the authors that two of the five blood analyses used in our study, the FRAP and d-ROM assays, have limitations in measuring antioxidant capacity in serum and plasma samples, as discussed in our paper [ [2] Harsem N.K. Braekke K. Staff A.C. Augmented oxidative stress as well as antioxidant capacity in maternal circulation in preeclampsia. Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol. 2005; 6 ([Epub ahead of print]) Google Scholar ]. There are several methods developed to assess the total antioxidant capacity of serum or plasma, three of which have been described in a recent publication by Erel [ [3] Erel O. A new automated colorimetric method for measuring total antioxidant status. Clin Biochem. 2005; 38: 1103-1111 Crossref PubMed Scopus (2225) Google Scholar ]. There is no accepted reference method measuring antioxidant capacity. Different assays have been used on biological samples from women with preeclampsia, with results varying from no change to increased or decreased antioxidant capacity in the circulation compared to normal pregnancy.
