Abstract
The author reports on the struggles of Algerian feminists to obtain equal treatment within the law. The Family Code, adopted in 1984, clearly attributes to women an inferior status. Algerian feminists, through their associations, reject this Code, which is in contradiction with the Algerian Constitution, stipulating equality and universal rights among all citizens. This fight is both against the Algerian regime and against the Islamists claiming laws inspired by Shari’a (Islamic law). Being a citizen is not only fighting for equal rights between women and men but also for a state promoting social justice, equality before the law and independence of the justice.
