Abstract

The problems in choosing an architecture for a satellite data network for less developed countries — the imperative need to maintain low cost with high utility, an agrarian economy and large geographic area — are qualitatively different from those encountered in more developed countries. This article investigates the suitability of several existing architectures for large satellite data networks for developing countries. A highly modular multi-star network architecture using VSATs is suggested as appropriate. Issues pertaining to messaging systems using satellites are also discussed.
