Abstract
Originating from a keynote lecture for the EAHN 2022 Conference, this review aims at mapping the field of architectural history as it presents itself today, tracing recent evolutions and new directions. Written from Europe, it does not claim to encompass a global perspective, but rather it focuses on what has been published in English and what has been disseminated in the scholarly community through organizations such as SAH (Society of Architectural Historians, USA) or EAHN (European Architectural History Network). The paper starts by questioning the very concepts of history and of architecture, contextualizing them in recent discussions and addressing the nature and meaning of both terms. It frames architectural history through its exchanges with neighboring fields (art history, construction history, urban history, and the social sciences), attempting to identify the core objects and methods of the discipline. The paper then discusses emerging research questions and methodologies that have recently come to the fore, such as environmental concerns, feminist critiques, decolonial strategies, and digital tools.
