Abstract
Middle Rocky Mountain archaeology is being impeded by provincialism and a preoccupation with the Northwestern Plains fostered by archaeologists failure to clearly distinguish between mountains and plains. Data from the mountains are interpreted in terms of the Northwestern Plains resulting in distorted and invalid interpretations and conclusions. Personal and favored interpretations and observations are being presented to the exclusion of alternative explanations and ideas. Regional archaeology has become dogmatic and complacent. Fresh ideas and interpretations are necessary if the role and significance of the Middle Rocky Mountains in western American prehistory are to be realized.
