Abstract

Historical archaeologists today give the study of plantations a prominent place in their field. Within recent years, plantation archaeology has had a growing presence at several well-established archaeological conferences, and archaeologists are beginning to write more about the subject for a wider audience (see, for example, Ferguson 1992). Archaeologists have shed much-needed light on plantation life, with a great deal of focus on the slave quarters (for overviews, see Orser 1990,1994a; Singleton 1991).KeywordsHistorical ArchaeologyFarm TenancyTenure ClassSouthern PlanterWhite OwnerThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
