Abstract
Abstract West‐central France has undergone considerable changes as a result of the postglacial rise in sea‐level, and an understanding of these is essential to the study of the prehistoric settlement patterns. The problems in using archaeological evidence in this way are considerable. Notwithstanding the difficulties, the settlements, megalithic monuments, salt extraction sites and shell middens of west‐central France play a crucial role in the study of regional sea‐level and coastal development.
