Abstract

The underlying tenet of this paper is that as the Vernacular Architecture Group approaches its first half-century, theoretical archaeology and the dismemberment of established models will compel more meticulous building recording and a more explicit distinction between evidence and analysis. The following study illustrates how, in the light of complex recording and analysis, a medieval hall and cross-wing house in Staffordshire has been reinterpreted as a possible house-byre.
