Abstract

La2Sn2O7 powder was synthesized by chemical co-precipitation, and Cu-La2Sn2O7 electrical contact material was prepared by a powder metallurgy method. The surface profiles and microstructure of Cu-La2Sn2O7 composite were studied by scanning laser microscopy (SLM) 3D surface technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after the cathode was eroded by 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 kV breakdown voltages in air. The results show that the peak current and erosion area increases as the breakdown voltage increases while the breakdown strength decreases. Varisized splash particles appear on the surface of the cathode. Microcrack is discovered on the ablated region with a voltage of 10 kV. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrate that La2Sn2O7 is decomposed into La2O3 and SnO2 after high DC voltage arc erosion. The arc ablation mechanism of Cu-La2Sn2O7 contact materials mainly includes melting, splashing and Cu-La2Sn2O7 cathode oxidation decomposition. The effects of La2Sn2O7 content on arc ablation performance of Cu-La2Sn2O7 composites were also investigated.
