Abstract

Summary form only given. In South Sea in Korea harmful red tides have broken out year after year causing a lot of coastal environment problems such as degradation of scenery and damage to fish farming. Green algaes have made water pollutions in Paldang reservoir which is a man made dam lake for drinking water source. Arc discharge technology was used to remove harmful red tides and green algaes. An arc discharge in water can produce shock wave, ultraviolet radiation and radical species. Using the characteristics of an arc discharge in water, we removed red tides and blue-green algaes. We used a high voltage pulse power system to generate the arc discharge in the water. The arc discharge was generated by applying a pulse voltage 10-40 kV to a stainless steel reactor. Multi tip electrode for low conductance water and multi coaxial electrode for high conductance water was used to remove 70% of algaes and 30% of red tide. Cell of algaes and red tide was destroyed by shock wave generated from electrical discharge. SR chamber and chlorophyll-a method was used to know removal rate of algaes and red tides. More than 80% of algaes and 35% of red tides were removed by arc discharge
