Abstract

Metabotropic glutamate (Glu) receptors via G proteins and ionotropic Glu receptors via an increase in intracellular Ca2+, trigger synthesis of intra- and intercellular messengers. In this chapter, we review the pharmacological characteristics and the mechanisms by which identified ionotropic and metabotropic Glu receptors alone, or in association, stimulate the synthesis of two putative retrograde messengers, arachidonic acid (AA) and nitric oxide (NO), in cultured neurons.
