Abstract

Dutch male rabbits with an average plasma tocopherol level of only 2.5 μg ml following administration of a ration low in vitamin E were injected intravenously with sodium arachidonate (4 mg kg b.w. ): all died or were sacrificed in moribund condition with pronounced thrombotic lesions in the pulmonary vasculature. Control rabbits with an average plasma tocopherol level of 20 μg ml were injected with the same dose of sodium arachidonate: the only response observed was slight respiratory distress that disappeared within a few minutes.
