Abstract

Nearly 500 scientists representing more than two dozen countries attended this recent meeting on Arabidopsis research**The Tenth International Conference on Arabidopsis Research, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 4–8 July 1999.. In his keynote address, Elliot Meyerowitz (California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA) reminded us of the pioneers in the use of Arabidopsis as a model species and discussed examples of what we are now discovering from the vast amounts of DNA sequence data that are available. Although Elliot finished by quoting S.J. Perelman, ‘We don’t know where we are going or how we’ll get there, but we know one thing – when we get there, we’ll be there.’ – the truth is we do have a well defined goal in mind: it is to know the function of every gene in the Arabidopsis genome. Results reported at the meeting suggest that we are on our way towards achieving this goal.
