Abstract

1. The literature on aqueous humour examination in differential diagnosis of iridocyclitis is reviewed. 2. It has been pointed out that it is possible to distinguish the granulomatous from the nongranulomatous iridocylitis by this method. 3. Characteristic features of granulomatous iritis are lymphocytes, monocytes and presence of few giant cells besides a high protein content. 4. In tubercular types, epitheloid cells could be seen. 5. Positive blood serological reaction and demonstration of Treponema under dark ground illumination are characteristic of syphilitic uveitis. 6. In the bacterial type, bacteria could be isolated. 7. In lepromatous type, altered corneal endothelial cells (resembling lepra cells) could be seen in the aqueous humous. Lepra bacilli were also isolated. 8. Lepra bacilli could be seen in conjunctival smears in patients without ocular involvement.
