Abstract

Transparent magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) spinel ceramics have been fabricated by an aqueous gelcasting forming technique starting from single phase MgAl2O4 spinel nano-powders. The stable slurries with 54 vol % solids loading were prepared in a novel aqueous-organic solution with only one additive. Furthermore, the rheological properties and gelling behaviors of the slurries were evaluated. Then, the porosity of the green bodies and microstructures of sintered ceramics by CIP and gelcasting method were investigated. Finally, highly transparent MgAl2O4 spinel ceramics with an in-line transmittance of 85.3% at wavelength 1100 nm were successfully obtained by gelcasting methods. The average grain size of the spinel ceramic was 22 μm.
