Abstract
River Tagus provides with an important hydraulic richness. Muslims learnt how to take advantage of this fact building small separate private owned industrial works. After the Christian conquest, Castillians found many water mills and other hydraulic devices. Given the new owners' lack of knowledge to maintain them these water mills slowly deteriorated and were eventually abandoned. In addition, Cristian conquerors introduced extensive cereal growing techniques, large estates and the feudal system.

Mi aportación al homenaje a la apreciada colega Regina Sáinz de la Maza está relacionada con algunos de los trabajos que actualmente estoy coordinando. Pero no es sólo éste el motivo de la elección del tema, sobre todo me ha inclinado a ello la gran tarea investigadora que sobre Órdenes Militares ha llevado a cabo Regina. Me ha parecido oportuno elegir un tema que tuviera que ver con estas instituciones, a las que Regina ha dedicado tanto esfuerzo con tan buenos resultados. Bien es cierto que ahora no son estas instituciones en si mismas las que me interesan sino su relación con los aprovechamientos hidráulicos y sobre todo éstos. Varios son los trabajos que he publicado sobre Ordenes Militares; el presente está relacionado con un estudio sobre las encomiendas madrileñas de la Orden de Santiago que publiqué en 1982 y del que puede ser una continuación.
