Abstract

Heavy rains, combined with melting snow, caused flooding in most of New England early in the month. Conditions in Maine were so extreme that the state was declared a disaster area on April 8. Flooding also occurred in Florida, but no damage was reported . In contrast, certain areas of Idaho are expected to experience severe drought this summer because of the extreme low streamflow conditions there. In general, streamflow was in the normal to above normal ranges for 76% of the 189 reporting streamflow index gaging stations in the United States, Puerto Rico, and southern Canada, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
