Abstract

When I was assigned a required Spanish class that meets 11/2 hours per week for two semesters this spring at Nanzan Women's College, I decided to try the Total Physical Response Method. The method has had great documented success in American classrooms and I wondered how it would work in a Japanese setting. Since other sections employ either Grammar-Translation or the Direct Method, I also thought that this would give me a good chance to do a comparative methods study, using zero level beginners. The results of the first semester (21 hours of instruction) are not in yet, but I can report on the procedures used and the modifications made so far, as well as on the learning progress achieved up until now.
