Abstract

The aim of this paper is to make a detailed picture of Memnon of Heracleia, whose historical work has reached us through Photius’ excerpta. After a general analysis of the work of which I analize the books and the stories they contain, I focus on two episodes of the work, the presumed Roman embassy sent to Alexander the Great and the creation of the Northern League, as well as on the figure of Amastris, basilissa of Heracleia. Leitmotif of these episodes, as well as Peri Heracleias, will be the polis of Heracleia, which, central player of the intricate policy of this period, will try to maintain her own autonomy and freedom against the expansionist aims of Hellenistic rulers.
