Abstract

We study the counter-current displacement of oil by water in porous media. The nonlinear diffusion equation modeling this flow problem is discretized in space with the mixed hybrid finite element method. We propose to evaluate the diffusion coefficient on each element by using the mean value of the saturation on the element's edges. Comparisons done with the analytical solution of this problem show that the new approach is more accurate than the classical one which is based on the mean value of the saturation on the element.
