Abstract

For large samples, precise calculations of moments of order statistics by an exact approach are time consuming and impracticable. For such samples a method of approximation is developed in this paper using the values of the failure rate function and its derivatives and the moments of order statistics in an exponential distribution. Application of the method is illustrated with reference to extreme order statistics in exponential, gamma and normal distributions.
