Abstract

This paper derives an approximate method for solving the steady-state Markov equations. The approximate solutions are determined using the known or easily obtainable solutions of a Markov system whose transition-rate matrix slightly differs from that of the original system. The method suggested makes it possible to derive approximate analytic expressions for the steady-state probabilities of system states and associated reliability indices and/or to calculate their numerical values. The expressions for the error bounds for the method are provided. The method is applied to derive expressions for the state probabilities of two transmission lines sharing the same right of way and exposed to common cause failures, as a demonstration.
