Abstract

In this paper, we consider a two-dimensional indentation problem for an infinite elastic body with a smooth circular elastic inclusion to which a concentrated force is applied at the centre. The angle of contact and the stress distributions are determined by solving approximately certain dual trigonometric series equations. The exact solution of the problem for a restricted class of elastic media as given by Noble and Hussain is recovered as a special case. Numerical results are presented for the angle of contact and the limitations of the method are discussed.
