Abstract

AbstractSolutions to the transonic small perturbation equation are obtained by approximating the velocity perturbation potential by suitably chosen decaying functions in the lateral direction. Two related methods are used to reduce the partial differential equation to non‐linear ordinary differential equations. Closed form solutions of these equations are then obtained showing that a different choice of the decaying function only affects the drag, but not the pressure behaviour. Comparisons with other theories are also given.
