Abstract

It has been recognized that remarkably high stresses take place at joints of structural members in large oil tankers (e. g. at the joints between deck or bottom transverse and vertical webs attached to a longitudinal bulkhead or shell plates), the fact being well confirmed by results obtained from experimental investigations on both actual ships and a large sized model. It is therefore very important to know accurately the stress distribution in such parts from a viewpoint of design and fabrication of the members.With a use of a stress function, the author analyzed a problem on the stress distribution in brackets with a curved edge. By substituting the bracket with an elastically equivalent curved beam, he also derived a simple formula for a practical use to estimate the stresses along the inner edge of the bracket, which has been verified by test results on several types of models.
