Abstract

Original definitions are given for informatics, for appropriate technology and for the new concept of appropriate informatics technology /AIT/. AIT is understood as those chapters of technical and engineering disciplines of informatics technology which are best suited to the local social, cultural, economic, technological and geographical conditions. These conditions will likely determine the stage of development in informatics of a country /initial, basic, operational or advanced/ and delimit the selection of the appropriate one among the alternative technologies. The government representatives from 80 countries in the recent UNESCO/IBI Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics /SPIN/ made recommendations for countries, international and non-governmental organizations. The purpose of this paper is to describe the qualitative feature of an AIT in light of the 44 recommendations of SPIN. In conclusion the paper calls for further quantitative investigations and new approaches in the field of AIT.
