Abstract

abstract : This paper deals with the treatment of the syntax of the verb in Maupas's Grammaire et syntaxe françoise (2nd edition, 1618); it intends to show how Maupas takes the Latin tradition and adapts it to the description of vernacular French. To examine the syntax of the verb Maupas successively adopts three points of view : disposition, word order, and usage of verbs. Thus he examines the verb, first as a part of speech, then as a constituent in the utterance, within the sentence and within the verb phrase. His Grammar therefore proposes a global treatment of the syntax of the verb.
