Abstract

Taximetric analysis of micro- and macro-scopical features of 37 European polyporous Hymenochaetaceae (basidiocarps and mycelia) did not support current generic concepts; actually these are based on mitism (hyphal systems), a criterion currently shown as not well suited for this group of fungi. Nevertheless, this preliminary study allows firm conclusions only at the level of some infrageneric regroupings (especially within Phellinus), the naturalness of which is supported by other data.
