Abstract

From available data concerning the abundance of chitinozoans (general mean: 15 specimens per gram of rock), it is estimated that on an average 350 specimens were fossilized per m 2 annually. An estimation of the real stocks of about 640 000 chitinozoans per m 2 per year is proposed. The evolution of chitinozoan abundance through time (maximum during the Middle—Late Ordovician and Late Silurian) and space (parallel evolution for Portuguese and Swedish stocks on one hand and for Saharan and Bohemian stocks on the other hand) is discussed.
